Excitement has arisen amongst the Spurs fandom, over the signing of James Maddison and Vicario, as well as further possible deals with CBs. But let's take a quick breather from that and talk about something equally as crucial: Outgoings.
Its no secret that Spurs had an incredibly poor season, some which can be owed to a mismatch of managers, but a lot can be put down to poor perfromances from players that arguably shouldnt be representing Spurs at this current time or any longer.
So going of that theme, here is my list of 6 outgoings I believe Spurs will have to make this season:
6. Harry Winks - Sell
Starting as a product of our youth development showing great promise as a youngster, to the point of being a regular international as well as producing his magnus opus of games against Real Madrid, one can only feel saddened by the decline of Harry Winks.
However, he is also a player I have repeatedly questioned to why he has remained at the club. Despite some sort of a ressurgence under Conte, Winks has proven to be flat in the midfield, lack impact, and overall not capable at the highest level. And to make matters worse, Winks barely even fulfilled his loan move at Sampordia due to an injury, preventing any possible development that couldve been made for the youngster in Serie A. He has arguably been one of our worser midfielders for the past couple years, so while he bleeds Spurs, he makes my eyes bleed watching him. It's time to go Winksy.
5. Hugo Lloris - Sell
Words cannot describe how grateful I am to the World Cup winning leader of our club for all his years of service. One of the finest goalkeepers in the world in his Prime, producing an element of class between the sticks every season.
However, good things don't last forever, and that certainly was the case as age finally caught up with the French veteran. Loris' decline was already beginning to show 2 years prior, with some below par goals conceded frustrating many Spurs fans, however this was overshadowed by his other better performances. That was not the case this season, as apart from a couple world class perfromances, such as against Man U at Old Trafford, Loris has looked shakey the entire season conceding lacklustre goals in notably big games such as Arsenal and Liverpool at home. But the final straw was Newcastle away, as Spurs would lose at a humiliating margin of 6-1, with Loris being replaced by Forster.
No doubt this is a truly harsh way for the Spurs legend to end his career at the Lane, but it was a symbolic one, that it was time to move on. Thank you for everything Hugo.
4. Japhet Tanganga - Loan
Now this is an interesting one. Like Winks, Japhet was a promising lad straight out of the Spurs youth, impressing many with his solid defensive perfromances at RB. My personal favourite will always be the defenders unbelievable showing against Man City in our first game of the 2021-22 Season. However, its safe to say things have gone downhill since then.
As of recent, Tanganga has looked shakey, a liability almost every time he's on the ball, as well as a poor defensive showing, which in return resulted in him gaining only 1 start in the Prem last season, another poor performance. The case with Japhet is simple: He just hasn't been good enough.
That being said, the position that Japhet had originally thrived in which was at fullback, was made no longer available to him following the back 5 tactics introduced by Antonio Conte, meaning he was shifted between RWB, or CB. Both positions where he struggled.
So simply put, the blame cannot be entirely put on Japhet here, and if his better performances have shown me anything, it's that he is a capable defender. Therefore, rather than selling the him, in my opinion a loan move would suit him better, as I believe the young lad still has some potential in him, which could provide useful in the future as Ange plays a back 4, where Tanganga could once more get a shot at his best position.
3. Ivan Perisic - Sell
Taken out of context, many might state that Perisic has had a good first season at Spurs!
Well...he certiantly hasn't had a bad one, however a lot of his assists came from set pieces, and his best moments of attacking output came in patches later in the season. So while there has been some imporvement in the aging Croatian, its not enough to convince me he should stay.
The past year has been a mixed bag for Ivan, while he did bring good numbers, in open play he was surprisingy poor throughout the season. One point which fans were right to make was his awful connection with Son on the ball, as the two would often clash in eachothers position, therefore weakening the attacking threat on the left side rather than strengthening it. The positives, were Perisic's set pieces and his crosses, but unfortunately some decent deliveries are not enough for me to consider he should stay.
It should be mentioned that after witnessing some of Croatia's recent games, its clear the winger turned wingback still has some fire in him, especially at the LW position, but his increasing age is a cause of concern, and I feel that we should appreciate the contribution he has brought but move towards a younger player. 2. Davinson Sanchez - Sell
Well, two of the players that show up in this list will not come as a surprise and Sanchez is one of them. It all looked so bright when Spurs signed the talented CB from the Dutch League to bolster their defence even further, but only a couple seasons later the columbian would be so error prone that he would be promoted no further than a squad player.
Life at the lane already looked bleak following the disastorous season of 2020-21 which led to the departure of Jose Mourinho, but things looked to be on the up when Sanchez went on a terrific purple patch under Conte, providing much needed solidity in the tottenham defence during the absence of Romero. However, this would only be temporary as last season Sanchez was back to his poorer form, consistently a weak spot in defence for the Lilywhites, where he was eve boo'ed of the pitch by fans for his perfromances.
Selling Sanchez seems only right now that it has been made clear he cannot consistently perform at the top level, and he has proven that himself. He's still relatively young, and I can certiantly see Spurs getting some decent money for him, but all the best wishes to Sanchez, whatever his future may be.
1. Eric Dier - Sell
Like Sanchez, we all knew this one was coming. The former england international has proven that he simply cannot cope at the big stage in his CB role time and time again.
We all have fond memories of Dier in his CDM days under the Poch era of Spurs, however that would sadly be the ceiling for him, as following some years of decline from 2018-2021 he would be demoted to a CB role, as well as losing his National place. During both Jose and Conte's stints at the N17, Dier showed a patch of promise, so much so in the 2021-22 that he was a regular starter and even got named to play at the World Cup. But as was the case with Sanchez, this would only be a patch as in consecutive seasons Dier would make mistakes costing spurs goals and being a fatal part of our calamtic defence this year.
I've heard some reports that Dier may be staying which frankly in my opinion, would be backwards from our club. We have gone this route of giving Dier chances, time and time again and were left to rue the consequences. As the old saying goes: The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over. We thank Eric for the loyalty and contribuition he has given over the years, but I'm afraid "Its time to go".
Conclusion
Overall that finishes off my list of players that believe Spurs should let go. I did not mention Lucas Moura as he is confirmed to leave this year, though I was conflicted on the possible addition of Ryan Sessesgnon: Do you reckon he deserves a chance?
Make sure to let us now and thank you for your time!
