Conte ball: A risk that did not pay off

Updated: Jul 1, 2023

Conte departed spurs after a 3-3 draw with Southampton that lead him to a fiery press conference with the media and the “history of the hot spurs” now why not a lot of time has passed, I think we can safely say that his term in charge of Tottenham was a failure, despite his 4th place finish. A bit like Mourinho a serial winner was not able to achieve success at white hart line. We will discuss a bit why he wasn’t able to but my main question is; where does spurs stand as we committed to Conte and where can we go from here? As these players haven’t left spurs and some are suited primarily to the conte system of play?

Why did spurs and conte not work out?

Well I think the first point to why it did not work is that just pure poor performances; I think that it needs to be said that why conte started well his boring negative football went totally against what spurs stood for and was never a recipe for success. His boring football was just not adapted for the modern game his 3-4-3 system was a by product of Italia 90’ and just was not suited for the modern game. I don’t agree with the idea he was Always meant to win things at the lane. It was always going to end and tears, and like Mouhrino was just not suited for Tottenham.

But unlike Mouhrino there was points that conte looked totally disinterested with the idea of being at the lane. I understand that he had personal issues relating to health and was fairly active while recovering. But when you hear the press conference at Southampton how he acted at spurs compared to other clubs it’s as if he didn’t even care about the club. Now if this is true or not we don’t know, same way we don’t know if he fell out with the team and lost the dressing room with reports Richardlison and Emerson royal gave Levy an ultimatum that they would leave if they did not get rid of the Italian. Conte does a lot of things for himself and he was never staying at spurs for long and while not valid I would say it sounds very likely of Conte.

Despite that the start was so promising, we all remember shouting Antonio from the terraces beating teams like Newcastle 5-1 and controlling the ball, scoring tactically wonderful goals and playing as we were Barcelona at some points.. So what was the turning point?

I think when Gian Piero died. While we all had heard reports of the impact he had on the club none of us really knew the impact he had until he was gone. Conte didn’t just loose a staff member but his best friend and, when you think his familly was in Italy, I couldn’t begin to imagine the grief he would’ve gone through. Looking back if I was conte I don’t think anyone at the club would blame him if he had walked then and there. And my deepest sympathy lies with him. The other event was Patrici, I won’t talk much about him as I am planing on my own separate piece on how in all honestly he was just a massive let down and one of Levy’s worst descion. But he definitely destabilised the ship, and was constant headache’s when it came to the uncertainty concerning his future. Again he had a bright start at the club but as time went on lost much effect and overall cost the club by how he departed.

A lot of people like to blame Levy for Conte’s failing and his departure. I don’t understand this at all and think for all the reservations I have about Levy I do not think that he could have done much more to help or assist Conte in his conquest for trophies. He got a £64 million striker two young wing backs, Kuluveski, Bentancuer, a back up goalie, and later on Porro. He got a lot of what he wanted and when he says the history of the “hotspurs”. It really annoys me because you apart of are proud history and I get he’s talking about our modern history where we have not won a lot. But at least we played entertaining, progressive football. It’s not the clubs thought he did not succeed while the events that surround him were not fortunate but he did not really do anything to improve the situation. You got everything you wanted and you failed not our fault it’s yours.

The long lasting effects?

Ange Postecoglou is known for getting rid of mass tone of footballers, and playing attacking football. The problem is we bought players to fit the Conte system and the question is will they fit into the new system of play. I think the perfect example is Porro. Now there is a possibility he can work under Ange’s system with full backs that push up higher in the system, but can he track back as well as players like Walker could and defend. The answer is probably not and if so you definitely could find better fits in the system. Now what do you do with him, ether sell him but that would be a waste of potential and money, you can ether bench him and let him rot, or play him and ether he’s brilliant or he plays like he did against Leicester. It’s worth saying it’s not just Porro it’s also: Spemce, Udogie, Kuluveski, Bissouma etc… Now I think players like Bissouma would flourish under a change of system but in particular the full back and wing backs might struggle under a new system.

It’s one of those situations where you can’t really blame anyone no one is at fault, Levy  had to back Conte and did too so he could play the system that he wanted to play. Conte had to bring in those footballers just so he could be “successful”. But we are now left in the difficult situation to try and figure out where these footballers can play,  some of them have the potential to be the greatest incredible players we have seen and I mean that honestly. Players like Udogie have ripped up the seria a with seriously tantalising dribbling and control. Yet I am not entirely convinced he fits in as easily as we think or produce as he did at Udinese, I would add it’s too early too tell and I still have high hopes for the young full back but my point remains can Conte players play in Postecoglou’s system.

What comes next?

Honestly, it goes ether one of two ways works out really well and they fit in perfectly to our system or we need more of a mass exodus then we think of players. Time will tell but I don’t think we are prepared as much as we think to deal with the idea that our new signings made be very slowly phased out over a period of time as they don’t fit it the new system of play. But I believe that these players now have to adapt and are ready too and for all my concern I do have full confidence we will prevail, never have I been so excited for the future of the club I really things our time is on the horizon. But the problem with spurs it’s the hope that kills you.
