Is This the Year Spurs' Trophy Drought Ends?

Could this season be the one in which Spurs finally end their run without a trophy? Perhaps, perhaps not, but this is undoubtedly the best Spurs side in quite a while.

I would argue that this Conte team could even give Mauricio Pochettino’s 16/17 team, who finished second in the Premier League with 86 points, a run for its money.

Although Pochettino’s side likely had a better starting eleven, Conte’s team has a vastly superior bench. Instead of Georges Kevin Nkoudou and Benjamin Stambouli on the bench, the Italian has Richarlison Andrade and Rodrigo Bentancur (assuming Højbjerg and Bissouma start).

However, the starting eleven is still incredibly strong. The only obvious weak spot is left-centre-back. But that feels very unfair on Ben Davies as he has performed very admirably when called upon by Antonio Conte.

Clement Lenglet is also a bit of a question mark as well. The Frenchman seems to have all the attributes that would be needed to succeed in Conte’s system. He is very comfortable on the ball, more than able to pick a pass, and able to keep his cool under pressure as he has shown so far this preseason.

However, Lenglet has been mistake-ridden in the past few seasons for Barcelona. Their fans just about celebrated his departure from the club. But, Conte is more than capable of getting a tune out of players like these. Victor Moses on Chelsea, Ashley Young at Inter Milan... the list goes on.

With this in mind, Spurs are well poised to push for silverware in all four competitions they are in this season. While the league and Champion’s league will likely prove to be a step too far, the FA Cup and/or Carabao Cup are more than possible.

Tottenham has suffered from not taking these competitions seriously in the past few years. This is the primary reason for our barren trophy run. But for this season, with a serial winner in Antonio Conte, silverware is bound to decorate the halls of N17 once again.
