Daniel levy, he has been public enemy number 1 at spurs for years but never before has there been such a divide between the spurs fan base and Levy. The rift is so large that it’s probably the most discussed topic at spurs and in the media other then Kane leaving.
Honestly, there is a general consensus while levy has bought us too heights and achieved some great success his footballing presence has been so underwhelming and so unimpressive that it’s generally believed a new course of direction is needed. As of today though, Levy has seemed to be given one last chance. Instead of changing his approach he’s gone ultimate levy, doubling down and is hoping that luck, a card he’s preyed on so much and so often will come back and save his reputation to a point he can carry on.
What are levy’s tricks?
Levy, is a great businessman. But unfortunately for him a football club is not a business the goal should not be profit but should be success. And why levy has gained some success with the stadium and the final of the champions league. It’s got to be said that his goals of being one of the biggest clubs in the world has just always fallen short. I would put this down to a lack of commitment, a lack of understanding, and a lack of drive. I think the exception where the conte years where he did back conte, gave him everything he wanted and it just did not work out. But I have a separate piece on that.
That being said levy has always had a pattern of tricks that infuriates every spurs fan and is the main reason the club has not progressed: The first is when ever negotiations have been discussed, never once has he not tried to squeeze the other club for every little penny and tried to just work endlessly in trying to just make sure he doesn’t had to pay one extra penny then needed for example: when Jack Grealish was young instead of paying 1 extra million, levy pulled out of negotiations. Now I don’t like to nit pic at certain decisions but this constantly happens. With the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Ruben Dias, Kim Min-Jae all players we have missed out on.
Second, is that if he can not get the option he wants particularly from England, he will instead get a cheaper European option. This was nearly done this window as Olmo was at one stage linked with the club, not because of his merit but levy was not willing to pay for Maddison price tag and he thought he might loose out to Newcastle United who were also linked with the 26 year old. Back in 2019 instead of going for a young Maddison or Fernandes he decides to go out and buy an inconsistent Lyon midfielder Ndombele. Instead of paying for Kim-Min Jae, he decided to buy Joe Rodon who had show some promise, but was never going to be top 4 potential. There are plenty more examples but the point is instead of paying a little more money he always goes for the cheap normally European option. This has lead to a lack in quality amongst our team and a lot of deadwood at the club.
His final little trick is never take the blame, his most frustrating, excruciating, agonising trait that he posses is that when he ever is skating on thin ice, or even worse when his mate is skating on thin ice instead of backing him or throwing him a life jacket, he constantly let him sink and replaces him with someone new. And the cycle goes round and round and round. I mean some managerial appointments, they started off well then came Garcia who was just utterly useless who nearly sleepwalked us too relegation. Then After he unfairly binned Redknapp after he decide he wanted the England job, he decided to appoint Andreas Villias-Boas who just reported poor position’s and performances when you compare it to the team he had. Pochettino is an interesting case, I mentioned in the beginning how much levy relies on luck. This was a long shot that payed off, he was the cheap option, the shot in the dark and against all the odds it worked and kept his position in charge of the club secure. He then tried to take the club in a new direction and while he did back one of the two mangers (Conte), it was just not our DNA and didn’t work out, but we all knew it wouldn’t work out and they were still both poor descions that completely disregarded the history and play style of the club, another trait of the levy handbook. I know I was particularly brief here that’s because I plan to explore this idea more in other pieces and his descion making.
Can Levy’s tricks get him out of trouble?
Postecoglu was not Levy’s first choice, that was most definitely Arne slot, but to be fair Postecoglu was on Levy’s radar for a long time. But granted out of the two candidates again he was the cheaper option and for all of Ange’s merits and success in Levy’s eyes that’s probably why he got the job. But too keep himself from falling off a knife edge Levy has had to build a whole new squad and here too he has returned to the levy playbook.
Raya, was amongst many Spurs fans first pick too replace Lloris, in fact he was the obvious solid proven option. Fabrizo Romano had reported personal terms had been agreed and all that it would come down to would be to negotiate terms between Brentford and spurs. Brentford were asking for £40 million. Levy decided this price tag was too high and did not pay this instead decided to agree the deals for an Italian goalkeeper Vicario. If people did not know who big Ange is, they certainly did not know who this Italian goalkeeper is. However, luck could be on his side as I do believe this young promising goalkeeper may be the next big thing and we might benefit from this descion I'm the same way I think Ange was the better of two candidates for manager. And just an intresting concept, would you accept this trade off if that means we pay more and get Maddison I would argue yes.
He’s also decided that Marc Guehi the young centre back from Crystal Palace was too expensive and was not willing too pay the £55 million price tag. Now to be fair I do like the names we are linked with in particular Bremer from Juventus who was a name linked instead of Guehi. But it is another example of a young English talent be passed up on, and like most spurs fans instead of getting the likes of Bremer we will end up with Adariabyo just because he’s cheaper, when we all know he’s just not good enough. I hope Levy proves me wrong.
Will it work?
Levy is a lot of things but one thing he certainly is, is resilient not a good type of resilient nor a heroic one, more like if the captain of the Hindenberg would be if he carried on flying after the crash. But for all the adversity, failures and mockery he’s bought to the club he’s now got one more tool that is experience. I don’t mind taking a risk, a chance or a gamble, look at Pochettino; a total shot in the dark that enabled us too ready the highest heights we could ever imagine. Postecoglu is a risk partially why I am so excited for this new chapter at our great club going back to our routes and rediscovering ourselves. And although I don’t think highly of him, Levy does seem to be learning from mistakes and putting a lot of effort in trying to forge a team we’re can show that our club has evolved from signing the likes of Fazio, to reports of today Bremer and Van de ven. I think Levy is figuring out a formula how to make Spurs succeed and why I think it’s too little to late, I would argue that we have to believe in his strategy on the field at least for now and hope it will bring us success in the near future.
