Tottenham Hotspur 22/23 - Keep, Sell, Loan (P1/2)

As the 22/23 season approaches rapidly, there is no doubt that Antonio Conte and his staff will have to make some difficult decisions regarding who will wear the famous white shirt next season. In this article, over two parts, I will discuss my views on who Tottenham should keep, sell and loan for the upcoming season!

Hugo Lloris

Following the extension of the French goalkeeper's Tottenham contract, the place in the squad for the Frenchman is in no immediate danger. Whilst the 35-year-old will most likely be retiring over the course of the next few years, the Tottenham captain will play a huge part in the Tottenham Verdict - Stay

Emerson Royal

The Brazilian joined Tottenham Hotspur last summer on deadline day to operate as a right back who has been played as a wing-back under the back five Conte system. Whilst he has improved from some poor performances under Antonio Conte, the best option for Tottenham, given the options already available and now the signing of Djed Spence, would be to move the 23-year-old on. Verdict - Sell

Davinson Sanchez

There is no question that the Colombian has not let down when called upon under Antonio Conte, showing massive improvement from previous seasons. Whilst his place as a starter seems to be quite distant, the centre-back would be useful for Tottenham in a season where rotation will be needed. Verdict: Stay

Cristian Romero

The Argentine has made himself known in the Tottenham defence and offers so much more than just a defensive ability. The Argentine was one of the best Tottenham players last season and was crucial in Tottenham’s search for a top four finish Without question, Cristian Romero should stay at Tottenham beyond this summer. Verdict: Stay

Ben Davies

The Welshman operated as a left centre-back last season, a position in which Tottenham are looking to improve this summer, as appose to his usual left-back role. The 29-year-old is versatile and for this reason, should stay on further than this summer. Verdict: Stay

Sergio Reguilón

The Spaniard joined Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2020 and showed potential almost straight away under Jose Mourinho. Now, under Antonio Conte, the Spaniard seems to have fallen behind in the pecking order despite the full-back showing promise under Antonio Conte’s opening games as Tottenham boss, before he was substituted due to injury. This summer, the Italian manager decided to leave the 25-year-old out of his pre-season squad, hinting that Sergio Reguilón is not in his plans for the upcoming season. With the introduction of Ivan Perisic, the place that Reguilón had in the Tottenham team looks in danger. The best option for both Tottenham and the player would be to cash in.

Verdict - Sell

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

The Danish international has not let the Spurs fans down since he moved from Southampton in the summer of 2020 to join Tottenham Hotspur. In some cases, the midfielder would be one of a few members to show passion amonst the Tottenham team during difficult times. Now that other players have joined Tottenham who play in similar midfield positions, the 26-year-old may face difficulty to maintain a starting role in the Tottenham team but, in my opinion, should stay on at Tottenham and play a crucial part in the Tottenham team, rotating with others

Verdict – Stay

Dane Scarlett

The young Englishman was often listed as a substitute for Tottenham last season in the absence of a backup striker, however Richarlison seems to have filled this role. Of course, having a second backup striker is useful but, since Dane Scarlett is at such a young age, he needs to go on loan to a lower league side where he is guaranteed game time to develop. If need be, he could go out on loan for more than one season to develop as a Harry Kane replacement in the future.

Verdict – Loan

Giovani Lo Celso

The Argentine spent a spell of last season on loan at LaLiga side Villareal, a team where he had a fantastic Champions League run with. At times, Lo Celso would operate as a striker, which makes him a versatile option. When at Tottenham, at times, it seemed that Giovani Lo Celso was going to be an Eriksen replacement which made Tottenham buy the player following a successful loan, but fans have not been impressed with his recent performances. He seems to be well suited in Laliga, so I think we should cash in for him and hopefully gain a decent amount of money for him.

Verdict – Sell

Harry Winks

Just a few seasons ago, the Tottenham supporters seemed certain that Harry Winks had a lot of pottential and could grow into a fantastic player, however, this did not happen. At the age of 26, it seems that the Englishman should depart his boyhood club and search for game time elsewhere.

Verdict - Sell

Rodrigo Bentancur

The Uruguayan joined Tottenham in January this year and has undoubtedly improved the Tottenham squad. Reports suggest that the 25-year-old cost Tottenham around £16 million in January, making him a bargain signing for Tottenham!

Verdict - Keep

Bryan Gil

The Spaniard has not really had a chance to fully prove himself as a Tottenham player since his move from Sevilla last summer and went on loan to Valencia in January. A loan move to a Premier League side may suit Bryan Gil so he can adapt to the pace of English football.

Verdict - Loan
