With Spurs looking to add a creative midfielder to their ranks, Fabio Paratici and co should put a move together for Leicester star James Maddison. Currently, there are rumors that Tottenham is looking at Maddison as well as Roma midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo. [Football.London]
There are three key reasons Spurs should choose the Englishman over his Italian counterpart.
One, Spurs still struggle with their homegrown numbers, as only Harry Kane, Oliver Skipp, Japhet Tanganga, Harry Winks, Ryan Sessegnon, Djed Spence, and Fraser Forster qualify. However, Harry Winks and Japhet Tanganga are likely to be on their way out this summer, with the latter seemingly closing in on a move to AC Milan.
This leaves space to be filled, preferably by none other than James Maddison.
Second, Nicolo Zaniolo has a terrible, terrible injury record. Having just recently recovered from tearing not just one, but both of his ACLs, the Italian is certainly injury prone.
On the other hand, James Maddison has lived a fairly injury-free career. The Englishman has played in at least 31 matches in the past four Premier League seasons. [Transfermarkt]
Lastly, James Maddison is Premier League proven. After having two creative midfielders flop for Spurs after moving from a different league, Tanguy Ndombele from Ligue 1, and Giovani Lo Celso from La Liga, Spurs should look to sign someone who has already proven that they can cut it in the league.
However, it is worth mentioning that Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur took to the Premier League like fish to water after the pair both made their move to Spurs from Juventus in Serie A.
James Maddison is undoubtedly the better signing in my opinion. However, that’s not to say that Nicolo Zaniolo would be a bad bit of business. I do believe that he could prove to be successful for Tottenham if given the chance.
The only bad move Spurs could make in this situation would be to not sign a creative midfielder and go yet another season without a natural number 10.
Who would you rather Spurs sign?
James Maddison
Nicolo Zaniolo
